We estimate Google will control 14.9% of the smartphone market through Android in 2010, growing to 23.2% in 2012

We estimate Google will control 14.9% of the smartphone market through Android in 2010, growing to 23.2% in 2012. For Apple, we expect the iPhone 15.9% of the smartphone market in 2010, growing to 17.6% in 2012. However, we believe the question is where the two platforms top out in terms of market share. An important factor for Android is that we ultimately believe that Nokia and RIM do not have the core software competency to be competitive in the smartphone space and will eventually need to adopt Android or potentially Windows Mobile Phone 7. Ultimately, we believe Android is likely to control over half of the smartphone market in the next five years. Apple’s essentially two phone focus (low price 3GS and higher price 4) will likely limit how much of the market Apple can control and we believe ultimately Apple’s smartphone market share tops out between 20-30%, which still offers significant room to grow.

HP filed Tuesday in a California state court against Hurd

Hewlett-Packard Co (HP-N38.740.160.41%) is suing the chief executive it ousted last month, Mark Hurd, to stop him from taking a top job at rival Oracle Corp (ORCL-Q24.07-0.20-0.80%).

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in a California state court, came a day after Oracle hired Mr. Hurd as co-president to help lead the database software maker as it tries to steal business from HP. It centres on HP’s claim that Mr. Hurd won’t be able to perform his job at Oracle without spilling HP’s trade secrets and violating a confidentiality agreement.

This type of complaint isn’t unusual in the technology world, nor is the confidentiality agreement Mr. Hurd had signed as part of a severance package from HP that could top $40-million (U.S.).

Technology companies often require such agreements because workers walk out the door with valuable technical information.

Mozilla has delivered a new update to the Firefox 4 Beta, which features faster graphics, new audio capabilities and enhanced security.

In a Sept. 7 blog post, Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s director of Firefox said the new update to the latest beta of the company’s popular open-source browser takes advantage of the built-in graphics hardware in Windows computers with DirectX 10 to improve performance on graphics-heavy websites.

“On supported hardware, Firefox will use Direct2D by default to speed up the display of content on graphically intensive websites, giving more power to the Web,” Beltzner said.

Semiconductor solutions specialist Samsung Electronics has introduced its 1GHz Arm Cortex A9-based dual-core application processor, code-named Orion, for advanced mobile applications. The dual-processor chip platform was designed specifically to meet the needs of high-performance, low-power mobile applications including tablets, netbooks and smartphones.

Orion will be available to select customers in the fourth quarter of 2010 and is scheduled for mass production in the first half of 2011, though the company said the processor will be demonstrated at the seventh annual Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum in Taiwan this week.

The warmth generated by human bodies in the Parisian metro will help heat a public housing project

The warmth generated by human bodies in the Parisian metro will help heat a public housing project in the city center, the capital’s largest owner of social housing said on Friday.

The building, located in the famous rue Beaubourg close to the Pompidou museum, is being renovated in an environmentally friendly way.

“Luckily, the building is connected to the metro through a staircase,” Francois Wachnick from Paris Habitat told Reuters.

The calories emitted by passengers, around 100 watts per person, combined with the heat from trains moving along tracks and the underground location of the metro mean that corridor temperatures are 14-20 degrees Celsius all year around.

The project, which is based on geothermal technology, aims to draw heat from subterranean passages and move it to heat exchangers before supplying heating pipes. The system will complement district heating.

The project should slash carbon dioxide emissions by a third compared to using a boiler room connected to district heating, Wachnick said.

A tender for the experimental project, which is expected to heat 17 flats, will be launched before the end of the year, and work is expected to start in 2011.

The good people at Twitter should send a bottle of champagne to Mike Wise

The good people at Twitter should send a bottle of champagne to Mike Wise.

Wise is the freshly chastised sportswriter from The Washington Post who was suspended last week for taking his company’s reputation too lightly when he intentionally used Twitter to post false information on the Web. When Wise keyed in a phony scoop about Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger–using a Twitter account that identified Wise as a Washington Post reporter–he was trying to show how some journalists and bloggers will reprint unfounded rumors without doing any fact checking. He intended to illustrate the weakness of blogs and social networks as news sources.

Instead, Wise succeeded in highlighting Twitter’s importance as an information pipeline.

No, not all the news distributed on the social network is accurate but what Wise should have realized is that Twitter is just a platform that enables anyone to publish info. The quality of information found there will vary widely and it’s up to readers to determine the source’s credibility. Legions of well-regarded journalists and bloggers use Twitter daily to alert readers to breaking news and provide them with a heads up about recently published stories.

And it’s not just pros who break news on Twitter. Some of the first reports and photographs about the heroic crash landing of a U.S. Airways commercial jet on New York‘s Hudson River came from non-professional journalists using Twitter. The first reports about the fatal shooting at Fort Hood in November first circulated on Twitter.

Twitter spokesman Matt Graves had this interesting statistic: one quarter of all Twitter posts include a link to another piece of content, such as a news story or video. Twitter has 190 million unique monthly visitors, so that’s a lot of content zooming across the platform.

Acer is down and Dell is back in second place

Image representing Dell as depicted in CrunchBase

Nine months after losing its number two ranking in the global PC sales market, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Dell retook the runner-up position in the second quarter of 2010 as rival Acer Inc. suffered a sales setback during the period, according to the latest report from market research firm iSuppli Corp.

Dell in the second quarter shipped 10.5 million units worldwide, down a negligible 1.2 percent from 10.7 million units in the first quarter. This gave Dell a 12.8 percent share of global shipments, down from 13.1 percent in the first quarter. However, Acer experienced a 6.2 percent shipment decline in the second quarter, with its shipments falling to 10.2 million units, down from 10.9 million in the first quarter. As a result, Acer’s share declined to 12.4 percent, down from 13.3 percent in the first quarter, consumer electronics research from iSuppli indicated.

Apple’s iPhone iOS continued to lead the U.S. smartphone operating system ecosystem at 56 percent market

Apple‘s iPhone iOS continued to lead the U.S. smartphone operating system ecosystem at 56 percent market share in August, but Google‘s Android platform came on strong, notching a 25 percent plot, said data firm Quantcast.

Apple said it is shipping 230,000 smartphones per day and its share was also buoyed from selling 1.7 million iPhone 4 units in its first three days on the market.

Despite disparagement from Apple CEO Steve Jobs that Google was counting upgrades when it claimed 200,000 Android handsets were shipping each day, Android sucked up OS market share from Apple, RIM‘s Blackberry OS and other platforms.

Quantcast also found that Android began 2010 with 18.6 percent smartphone OS market share and managed to take 11.4 percent share from Apple’s iOS, 1.6 percent from RIM’s Blackberry and 5.7 percent from all other OS providers, such as Microsoft Windows Mobile and Palm’s WebOS.
